The Empty Room is a continually evolving collective of theatre artists in Toronto, Canada. We come together, time and time again, out of a fascination with the unique power of live performance; the wonderfully simple thing that separates live theatre from almost all other art forms is that the artists are present, they share in the energy of the room with you, they breathe the same air. For tens of thousands of years, humans have gathered together to share in the rituals of theatre, in one way or another, to listen to the storytellers and dance with the shaman. The act of communication through story and song is as innate to our species as breathing. Even today, with all the technological advances of recorded media and long-range communication, the image flashing upon a device can never match the immediacy of an artist being close enough to take you by the hand and lead you on the journey personally. Theatre is what we do, and this is why we do it.
